Weatherproofing your kids

In our experience a dry child is a happy child, so we wouldn't go camping without a full set of waterproofs for our kids.

Here at Camping Kidz we have tried waterproofs in many shapes, sizes and designs and put together a short list of the ones we love, all of which are available to buy online at the Little Wide World store.

We have included waterproofs for babies, toddlers and children, and included lighter weight items as well as some snuggly ones for winter days.

Waterproofs for the under 1's

Babies under 12 months are often under rain hoods in prams so are well protected from the elements, however if you want to take your baby out in an infant carrier or sling you will need to take your brolly to keep you and baby dry.

With this in mind Beebyhart Ltd created the Carricover Lite - a light weight waterproof for babies under 12 months, it can be put on your child without having to take them out of your front carrier. The waterproof fabric is light enough that the Carricover can be folded up and popped into a pocket or backpack - so much more practical than an umbrella!

Mud magnets

If your baby is too big for a Carricover but has not yet found their feet chances are they’re getting wet or muddy knees when they go out to explore. The simplest solution for this is a waterproof all-in-one. Our daughter’s first camping trip was transformed when she was put in one of these and able to crawl around the campsite without getting soaked by the wet grass.

The Muddy Buddy is a fantastic all-in-one made by Tuffo, an American company which specialise in producing non-technical outdoor gear. Made from a tough waterproof fabric with reinforced knees and bottom your kids can get up to some serious play without damaging their clothes.

Spotty Otter produce a range of waterproof all in ones in heavier weight fabrics. Their unlined waterproofs are great for spring and autumn, providing wind and rain protection; the fleece lined waterproof range is snug and warm enough to cope with a British winter; and their down filled range makes great snow-wear.

Waterproof Trousers, Dungarees and Anoraks

Once your child is beyond the potty training stage an all-in-one waterproof is best avoided unless you are a master of the quick change. Lightweight waterproof trousers are ideal for protecting trousers and little legs from long wet grass and stingy nettles.

Rukka have a well deserved reputation for producing excellent waterproof clothing and their kids range is every bit as good, and as colourful, as their adult range. With trousers, dungarees for the little ones, and matching jackets available in a range of colours - including pink, blue, green, red and the iconic yellow - there is something to suit every taste. The light weight elastoplast fabric is exclusive to Rukka and provides full waterproofing with a play friendly stretch.

Spotty Otter apply the same technical and quality standards to their jackets and trousers as they do to their all-in-ones. Their waterproof trousers are made from a heavier weight waterproof material with reinforced knees. It would take a tough play session to get through these. Spotty Otter jackets come in the same fleece lined, unlined and down filled options as their all-in-ones. Available in red, blue and lavender these are comfy and well proportioned so as not to restrict movement. Cool enough for the most fashion conscious but smart enough for school.

Kid's waterproofs at Little Wide World

When selecting products for the Little Wide World store our main considerations were:

- Suitability for the age group: considering things like nappy changing for younger children and movement for the older ones;

- Materials used: are the lightweight fabrics strong enough to resist tearing if your kids a hedgerow diving? Are zips secure? Are seams taped? These are the things make a good waterproof great;

- Design and cut: has the product been designed for kids or scaled down adults? Children’s proportions are different to those of adults so children’s clothing needs to be designed for the relevant shape for their age.

- Do they do what they are intended to do? Do hoods stay up in the wind? Does a snow suit keep a little one snug in the snow?

We selected products that meet these criteria and more, with reflectors on waterproof trousers and peaks on hoods to keep rain out of eyes, we are confident that your kids will find the right waterproof for their activity in our store.
