Children's Sleeping Bags - A quick guide

After the tent, the sleeping bag is the most important part of your camping kit. Anybody who's camped out in a cheap sleeping bag knows that you really do get what you pay for where comfort is concerned.

The same goes for childrens sleeping bags. A character sleeping bag is fine for sleep overs and pyjama parties but for camping out it is worth investing in a good quality bag for your young ones. If your kids are cold at night then chances are no-one in the tent is going to get any sleep!

Sleeping bags for toddlers and babies
For babies under 12 months blankets and a Gro-bag, or similar, is all that is needed. Very small babies are not able to regulate their own body heat and it is easier to keep a baby warm without overheating by adjusting the number of blankets depending on the temperature.

For toddlers is it is a good idea to invest in one of the specially made small sleeping bags. These are just like miniature adult bags, come in either square or mummy shape and provide your toddler with a really cosy nights sleep. We stock Vaude toddler sleeping bags and a personal favourite is the Charlie, which when fully unzipped can double up as a play blanket.

All the Vaude toddler sleeping bags have reinforced stitching for slits on the back. If you need to you can open up these slits to fit your sleeping bags into a jogger or stroller rather like a cosy-toes cover.

Sleeping bags for children

It is tempting to buy a cheap adult bag for children, but if your childs comfort is important (and which parent would say it isn't) then don't.

A badly fitting sleeping bag will develop "cold spots" which will lead to a loss of body heat. By buying a sleeping bag that is the right size these cold spots do not develop and a warmer nights sleep can be enjoyed.
